Merilyn ArmstrongWe recently learned about the death, on Tuesday 3 March 2015, of Merilyn Armstrong, a mathematics teacher at La Châtaigneraie from 1999 to 2004. Her former colleague Keith Black wrote the tribute below.

We were very sad to read the news of Merilyn’s death. Merilyn worked at La Chât for five years from 1999 until 2004. She was a most valued member of the mathematics department, always doing much more than the call of duty.

As well as her loyalty and integrity, Merilyn had a tremendous rapport with colleagues and students alike. She was a strong believer in mathematics being integral to everyday life and not to be restricted to the classroom. One of her many contributions was the introduction of a “Maths Day” in school. This led to many types of competitions for all the classes and the one which particularly comes to mind was the t-shirt competition. This was won by a student who had little or no confidence in the subject. It was such a pleasure to see the boost in confidence and interest resulting from winning this award.

During her time at La Chât, Merilyn was diagnosed with cancer. She took her treatment so bravely and cheerfully and jokingly described Genolier as a hotel rather than a hospital.

Our sincere condolences go to her husband Jim and children Matt (La Chât '98) and Lauren (La Chât '02) at this sad time.
