Mary Lee Melnick (née Corfman)We learned today of the recent death of former history teacher Mary Lee Melnick (née Corfman), who retired in 1997 following a career at La Grande Boissière that also included periods in the admissions and guidance departments. She died peacefully in her sleep on 22 July 2015 following a long illness.

She was greatly appreciated by her students, many of whom have been expressing their sadness and gratitude on Facebook. Among the tributes she is described as "a wonderful teacher and a beautiful person"; "special, kind and graceful"; and "one of my favourite teachers and helped instil my love of history".

The photograph shown to the right is taken from the LGB Yearbook for 1979, when her colleagues in the History Department included Messrs Leach, Rowe, Knight, Bassam and Neenan.

In accordance with her wishes, no funeral will be held. Instead those who wish to remember and celebrate her life are invited to join a musical soirée on Thursday 13 August from 19h00. The venue will be the Domaine des Champs-Lingot in Anières, 158-160 route de Chevrens. (Click for directions.)

Our sincere condolences to her surviving family, including her son Jonathan and his father Burton Melnick.

I only met Mary Lee a couple of times, through Burt Melnick, back in the early 1980s. But my impression of her remains strong, as a fine, clean-cut, positive person. I am sorry to learn of her long illness, and wish her and her family all the best.
