On 1 June 2015, my brother Juan died peacefully at home, after a short illness, with his beloved wife Frances by his side. Their son Llewelyn was also there. Juan was seventy.

He died in the place he loved best in the world, high up in the mountains of the north-west coast of Mallorca, overlooking the sea.

Juan came with me to Ecolint in 1957 and stayed on after I left. He had a good life and many friends for whom he always had plenty of time. After Ecolint he studied photography in London, then travelled to Australia for a year or so and eventually settled in Mallorca.

He was a keen photographer and also enjoyed looking after his land, planting vegetables and tending fruit trees and vines, but his great love was music. From a very young age he played the guitar and the bandurria (a type of mandolin) and at Ecolint he first encountered the world of rock & roll which would remain with him forever.

In the late seventies he formed a band (The Pa Amb Oli Band) with other musicians  – our younger brother Tomás joined them in the eighties –  and they played at village fiestas and big parties on the island, always with huge success. His last gig was just a few days before he became ill. He inspired young musicians. He loved life.

I would like to thank all Ecolinters who have written or emailed me with their kind words and good memories. It has meant a lot to me and to all the family.

I remember Juan well though he was ahead of me at Ecolint. Wonderful, engaging person. Who could forget him?
