Whisky Tasting on the 7th October 2009
Text Christine Kjellberg, arrangement M-Ch. Muller
At the initiative of the Alumni Association, we
(alumni and friends) were invited to a whisky tasting at La Grande Boissière.
What is a more appropriate place for such a noble act than a castle? Yes, we
were in Le Château, the old building next to the entrance of the campus.
Malcolm Andrew, an expert on whiskies and author of
several books about the subject showed us an interesting PowerPoint
presentation, where we learned that the best whiskies come from Speyside in Scotland, how
Whisky is distilled and how to distinguish between malt and blended whiskies. Then came the practical side. We were given 6
different labelled glasses (with a reasonable quantity of 2 centilitres each)
to test what we had learnt. Some needed a few drops of water adding to release
the flavour. Longmorn had a smoky taste, Glenlivet is the most popular but
Aberlour, a single malt is considered a miracle.
To end the evening we were served a Chivas Cooler
(a cocktail with 1/3 Chivas, 2/3 ginger ale, lime and ice cubes). After this
joyous evening, we felt light-headed, happy although little wobbly as we walked
out into the dark night.
It was an evening to remember and, next time, we
encourage you to join us – and bring your friends!
