On
Monday 14 December, 15 of us, with some (possibly slightly mystified) partners
and friends, gathered on an inclement London evening at the St. Moritz
Restaurant in London’s Soho district for an Escalade dinner.
Over fondue neuchâteloise or fondue bourguignonne,
accompanied by enormous quantities of Fendant, we all made the difference in
our years melt away in our celebration of the Mére Royaume and the defeat of
the dastardly Savoyards. We ranged in
class years from 1961 to 1999: delicacy forbids the mention of actual ages, but
according to tradition the oldest (Elizabeth Winter) and the youngest (Carine
Hejazi) amongst us demolished the Marmite kindly supplied by the Alumni Office
in Geneva, accompanied by the usual recitation: "Ainsi périssent les ennemis de
la république”. The dark chocolate and
the marzipan vegetables proved to be the perfect dessert.
The
full cast list was: Andre Astrow (LGB’74), Gilbert Bastyra (LGB’66), Joanna
Clemens (LGB’90) and her husband, Robin Dormer (LGB’69), Nadia Godin-Heymann (LGB’96),
Carine Hejazi (LGB’99), Nick Hembrow (LGB’81), Roger Murray (LGB’67), Simon
Ortiz Patino (LGB’74) and his guests, Kim Perry (LGB '68), Joseph Rochlitz (LGB’74),
Sally Verity Smith (LGB’75), Kelly Stelle (LGB’66), Simone Wieser (LGB’73), Elizabeth
