The Centre des arts welcomed its second flock of alumni artists, chosen to display their work for the Second Annual Alumni Exhibition, this past Tuesday 21 November. Following the vernissage, stand-up comedian and La Chât alumnus Nadim Boutemine delivered on his promise to send his audience into fits of laughter by gently poking fun at the Ecolint community.

The Exhibition Artists

Frederic Aranda (La Chât '98), an established force in Portrait photography, shortlisted by The Times as the 'Young Photographer of the Year' a year after graduation;

Clea Lautrey (LGB '06 ), an industrial designer by trade, who has received multiple design awards, including the Industrial Design Society of America (IDSA) Junior Merit Award.

James Cabot Ewart (La Chât '04), a multi-disciplinary artist who likes working in any and all mediums, for whom trust, intimacy, authenticity, and humour are the conceptual driving forces expressed throughout his work;

Apnavi Thacker (LGB '96), whose practice is informed by memory, botany, ecology and the Anthropocene, and involves constructs formed through the mediums of drawing, installation and video;

Alexandra Zervudachi (La Chât '10), an architect who has worked in Santiago for Alejandro Aravena (2016 Pritzker Prize laureate) and in Zurich for the interdisciplinary design practice Urban Think Tank;

The Vernissage

Due to unforeseen last-minute circumstances (job offers and other extraordinary opportunities for a few of our artists), only Frederic Aranda was able to be present at the show. His presence, however, was enough to make the moment memorable; students, former teachers, and curious attendees alike were inspired by Frederic's work, his accessibility, and authenticity.

A group of art teachers from La Châtaigneraie (some still teaching, some retired) made the trek to the Vernissage: Beatrice Hoesli, Jaqueline Hatch, and Birgit Jennings were delighted to reconnect with their former student Frederic Aranda

Frederic also spent time in the classroom with Year 12 and 13 students, presenting his work and sharing his story; he answered students' questions with thoughtfulness, honesty, and wit, encouraging art students to follow their passion, and most importantly to spend time practicing it as much as possible.

The Comedy Show

Nadim Boutemine (La Chât '07) delighted his audience with a comedy show that put forward his undeniable talent for improvisation, his perfect bilingualism, and his hilarious insider's look into the International and Ecolint communities. Skipping seamlessly between English and French, Nadim joked about the collision of cultures he lived through while he was a student at La Châtaigneraie, the PTA, the idiosyncrasies of life in Geneva , and was even able to include audience members into his show. All in all, a very good show, as indicated by the laughter and enthusiastic chatter that filled the Centre des arts at the end of the show. The Centre des arts is exploring the development of Comedy Show series in the near future. Continue checking the Centre des art's website for further details and to stay updated on upcoming events.
