The Class of '72/73 gather at Chilworth Manor

A day after the London bombings, July 8th-10th was perhaps not the most auspicious weekend for a reunion. Nevertheless determined not to let these events get the better of them the Class of 72/73 met up for a reunion in Southampton. The idea was first muted a year ago at the World Reunion in Geneva - thanks to Ratko Djukanovic who took the bull by the horns it actually happened.

Friday afternoon we started appearing at Chilworth Manor where we met for a few afternoon drinks. Some of us hadn’t seen each other in 34 years. After a few problems working out who was who the years just slipped away…

That evening we gathered at the Clump Inn (where did that name come from?). By then there were twenty of us – fourteen alumni and three spouses and Eric Anthony who managed to join us for the evening. An opportunity for the “Interns” to pose for a memorial snapshot.

On Saturday we set out to visit Winchester and its historic cathedral. Somehow Adrian Copplestone managed to track us down and join us there on the green in front of the cathedral. Despite digital technology we convinced some poor soul to take a group photographs with eleven different cameras!

Afternoon tea followed, and the braver amongst us set out on a walk to visit some of Winchesters other sites. Half way through the walk at the St Cross Hospital -the question everyone wanted answered was “Where were Max and Priscilla?” It turned out they’d disappeared in the search of the “Compton Gardens”. Inspired by their descriptions several us went in for a look before realising that we should have paid an entrance fee!

That evening we came back to Winchester for dinner. By then there were thirty of us. (Thirty-one – sorry Benjamin!)Twenty six alumni, four spouses and one two week old baby. It’s safe to say that the “Hotel du Vin” had never seen anything quite like this bunch of fifty years old acting like teenagers again. Our impromptu sing-along and a re-enactment of what must be the most original way of revising for a Maths IB exam - even prompted the Restaurant to ask us to keep the noise down.

Sunday and people were already starting leave with promises not to leave it so long next time. Bruce Berenson had brought along his Frisbee, something that reminded some of us that we definitely weren’t as young as we used to be. The six of us who were returning to Geneva somehow managed to squeeze our luggage and ourselves into an Opel Zafira (How they can rent these as seven seaters is beyond me?) The plane at Gatwick was an hour late but for us it was just an excuse to prolong what had been a really wonderful weekend.
