Missing marmite didn't dampen spirits in DC

With more chocolate marmites than ever before sent around the world to Escalade dinners this year, perhaps it was inevitable that one might go astray. The marmite destined for Washington DC (or McLean VA, to be more precise) arrived on Friday 11 December but unfortunately the dinner took place the weekend before. The show went on!

Cynthia Richmond (LGB '74) led the organizing team for Washington DC Escalade dinner again, ably assisted by Pennie Aldrich (LGB '65) and Allison Baca (LGB '77). Allison and her husband Kurt again generously made their home in McLean available for the event. A total of 21 alumni attended.

While the lack of the marmite de l'Escalade was a disappointment, a lovely display of Geneva flags, chocolate coins and marzipan vegetables almost made up for its absence. Post-fondue, the alumni gathered around the table and sang the Escalade songs as usual.

The following weekend the late-arriving marmite was smashed as per the tradition - see below.

The complete list of alumni who attended is as follows: Allison (Anderson) Baca (LGB '77), Jeff Berkin (LGB '74), Russ Bernhardt (LGB '73), Karin Bierstein (LGB '73), Lee Brownson (LGB '74), Carol Carter (LGB '74), Bill Crane (LGB '74), Noreen (Sicat) Crawford (La Chât '83), Robert Cunningham (LGB '80), Madeleine (Weiss) Fagan (LGB '74), John Handy (LGB '69), Chris Knepper (LGB '80), Philip Lapides (LGB '85), Enid Makundi (LGB '91), Sean Mallon (LGB '85), Amy Plotnick (LGB '71), Michael Richmond (LGB '78), Cynthia Richmond (LGB '74), Philip Scruggs (LGB '84), Andrea Steierman (LGB '78) and Gayatri Sundaresan (LGB '01).

The traditional songs were sung despite the missing marmite.

The following weekend, the late-arriving marmite was smashed. Allison Baca's daughter Christine and Sean Mallon's daughter Alexandra attempted to do the honours, but couldn't quite muster the strength...

...so their fathers had to take over: Kurt on the left and Sean on the right.
