Julian AzkoulAn Ecolint alumnus who leads a dynamic young ensemble called the United Strings of Europe is bringing the group to Geneva and La Grande Boissière next month. In addition to rehearsing and working with students at the Centre des arts, ensemble will perform a free concert at Geneva's Espace Fusterie on Wednesday 6 April.

Julian Azkoul (LGB '06) appeared in the most recent issue of echo magazine in a feature on alumni building their careers in the music industry. Following his studies in Wisconsin, Cambridge and London (at the Royal Academy of Music), Julian became a full-time musician working a wide variety of genres.

He is now the leader and manager of the United Strings of Europe, which brings together young professional musicians from across the continent. He is thrilled to have this opportunity to bring the group to the city where he grew up and to his alma mater.

Workshops and free concert

Julian and his fellow musicians will spend two days based at the magnificent Centre des arts working with Ecolint students. They will provide demonstrations and presentations as well as holding some open rehearsal sessions.

The ensemble, conducted by Franck Fontcouberte, will give their first performance in Geneva, at the Temple de la Fusterie (Espace Fusterie) on Wednesday 6 April at 20:30. Entry will be free-of-charge, with post-concert collection for the musicians.

With music by Elgar, Shostakovich, Walton, the programme will also include the Swiss premiere of American composer David Winkler's Double Concerto featuring Julian Azkoul on violin and Canadian pianist Walter Delahunt, as well as 'Señores les voy a contar...', a piece by local Genevan composer Arturo Corrales.

Hi Stephen, thanks for your kind words. It would be great to see you at the concert! Jad has been instrumental in organising it and will be there too. It's going to be fun! Julian

Congratulations Julian. I still remember your rendition of "Blackbird" by The Beatles. Ecolint is lucky that your family ever walked through its doors. I'd love to come: if I can get my favorite alumna to come with me. Will Jad be there too? /S.A. class of '02
