Adam SmolikIt has now been five months since our close classmate Adam Smolik (La Chât '89) unexpectedly passed away a few days into the new year. Today we still remain in shock, trying to fathom the fact that he is no longer with us.

Those who remember Adam, many of whom were present at his funeral in January, will understand. He was a person you could not ignore; someone who would throw himself feet first into any situation with an open spirit and without judgement, his loud and joyous voice ensuring we knew he was around.

Adam was a man of the outdoors and would spend any free time he could spare to go hiking, ski-trekking or camping with family and friends. He had an innate curiosity to discover new vistas. He had an amazing self-taught knowledge of nature and knew how best to survive in most surroundings (provided there was a beer cooler in the vicinity).

We all miss him greatly. There are few days that I don’t think of this dear friend who I met at La Chât in Year 4, at the grand opening of the then new Primary school. He had a smile and a twinkle in his eye you would never forget. We spent hours on our bicycles exploring the Terre Sainte area and also managed to get up to a great deal of mischief, as boys do.

Growing older, a group of us from the class have stayed in touch as best we can, with time being the limiting factor as kids and work soak up our schedules, in a good way.

"The last good time"

I am grateful that some of us took the time to have dinner with Adam just before Christmas last year. As always, we simply picked up from where we left off, relaxing and enjoying ourselves in the company we have felt most comfortable in for so many years. That may well be my closing message, and it is important we keep reminding ourselves of this: you never know what awaits you in life. As Stephen King once wrote:

It doesn’t have to be the last good time. But sooner or later the last good time will come around. It does for all of us."

Remember to always take the time for those who are important to you, as generally the best times we have are with those we love.

The passing of Adam has united many of us and created even stronger bonds of friendship. On 11 June, at a festival organized in his honour by Stef Pasternak along with several alumni and La Chât teachers, we will remember Adam’s love of music, friendship and harmony.

Rest in peace my dear old friend!

Nearly 30 years later, I still remember all of you and the times you came to my P.E. classes ! ..... (well, some of you !!) Hope you are all well and enjoying life wherever you are. Sorry I can't make it to this year's Kermesse and Adam's remembrance service, but I will be thinking of you all. Kind regards, Keith Rhodes.
