The Centre des arts at La Grande Boissière played host yesterday evening to a celebration of the artistic creativity of our alumni, with a vernissage for the first Annual Alumni Exhibition and a concert by the United Strings of Europe, led by Julian Azkoul (LGB '06).

The Annual Alumni Exhibition features the work of four art and design professionals from our Ecolint alumni community. Three of the four artists were present for yesterday's vernissage: Matias Echanove (LGB '95), Natacha Steiner (La Chât '03) and Tania Grace Knuckey (La Chât '05). The fourth, Tyson Skross (LGB '98), who is based in the USA, will visit the school in early December.

Matias Echanove, whose work is centred on urban culture and participatory planning, has been living in Mumbai for eight years. This week at LGB he has been running art workshops with students (with the output on display in the lobby of the Centre des arts). The other featured artists will also be working with students in the weeks and months ahead, thus creating a real connection between the school's creative past, present and future.

Speaking at the vernissage, the Co-Head of Art at LGB, Gilles Grassioulet (himself an alumnus of the school), stressed how important and valuable it is to show today's students that their are many paths open to them when it comes to the world of art and design. Gilles was the driving force behind the exhibition, which he hopes will grow into an important Ecolint tradition.

The Annual Alumni Exhibition runs at the Centre des arts until 13 January 2017.

While artist Tyson Skross (LGB '98) was not able to make it to the vernissage, he will visit Ecolint in December to run art workshops with students. His series of works The Losers is on display as part of the Annual Alumni Exhibition.

Splendid Strings

Adding to the buzz at the Centre des arts, and right across Ecolint's three campuses this week, has been the visit of the United Strings of Europe. This ensemble of talented young players, based in London but drawn from across the continent, is led by Julian Azkoul (LGB '06).

Julian Azkoul spoke eloquently about the ensemble, the United Strings of Europe, and about the works they presented, under the baton of Franck Fontcouberte.

They performed an entertaining programme of works by Mozart, Boccherini (with cello soloist Alexander Rolton) and Dvorak, along with the world première of Julian's own arrangement of Schubert's Quartettsatz. Throughout the week members of the ensemble have been spending time with music students, not only at La Grande Boissière, but also at Campus des Nations and La Châtaigneraie.

Julian Azkoul expressed his gratitude to John Davies, Head of Music at LGB, and the entire team at the Centre des arts for making the visit possible.
