Aya Tanimura (La Chât '99) is a writer and film director based in Los Angeles. She has been responsible for a number of critically acclaimed short films and has directed music videos for various artists including singer Katy Perry.

In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Aya credited Katy Perry with enabling her and co-director Tim Nackashi to make a short film that draws parallels between the current political climate in the USA and the mass incarceration of 120,000 Japanese American citizens during World War II.

Carrying the message #DontNormalizeHate, the "public service announcement" was inspired by the anti-Muslim rhetoric that emerged from the campaign of President Elect Donald Trump. At the time of writing the film has been viewed almost half a million times on YouTube.

“Trump has created an atmosphere of fear for Muslim Americans in the United States,” Aya told the LA Times. “The accountability and responsibility for what you say and do now has been lifted so people feel a little freer to be racist, or act upon racism, because there are not necessarily consequences for it — it’s just acceptable behaviour. If laws are put in place to back that up, it will be pretty scary.”

We got in touch with Aya this week and learned that she has been interested in film since a very early age, although there were no film classes in La Chât during her time at the school. (Film-making is now offered to students as a subject.) She has fond memories of her time in the Art Department with Mrs Hoesli, Mrs Hatch and Mrs Jennings, as well her theatre work with Mr Pasternak.

We wish Aya every success with her campaign and her future career!
