Entrepreneurs visit Year 11

When Laura Italici, Head of Year 11 at LGB, read the echo magazine article about alumni entrepreneurs in the food industry, she thought of the students she guides towards their IB choices. Faced with a multitude of IB subject choices, these students often need to see concrete examples of what life after the IB looks like, and why people make the academic choices they do.

Reaching out to the Alumni Office, Laura asked if it might be possible to get some of these entrepreneurs to engage with her students at a morning school Assembly. As owners and founders of some of Ecolint students' favourite restaurants, the entrepreneurs would surely strike chord in a sometimes distracted audience.

So on 30 April, Sebastian Graf from El Salad and Maximilian Fischer (LGB '06) from Nero's Pizza came to share their stories with Year 11 LGB students. Seb focused on the idea of doing what you love, striving for excellence, and having solid sources for self-confidence. Max related his story more to Ecolint, and how his years there (as well as the IB!) prepared him for the Ecole Hôtelière and the steps in founding Nero's Pizza.

Both talked with passion about their activity, and related to the students with ease and humour. The students listened attentively, asked questions, and were delighted to hear from those who have succeeded in building a viable business in Geneva. From asking general questions like "how did you decide to study at l'Ecole Hôtelière?" to more pointed ones like "why did you hike the price of your salads last month?" the students were able to see first hand what an entrepreneur's journey is like, and the kinds of issues they deal with on a daily basis,

After the success of April's Assembly, we hope to find many more opportunities for alumni to come back to campus and inspire our students.
