Eileen Betty's daughter reached out to the Alumni Office recently, to inform us of the passing of her mother in September 2018. Eileen worked for several years in LGB's Chemistry department as a lab technician.

Eric Anthony, who knew her well, shares his thoughts on his time with Eileen:

"Eileen Betty was a Laboratory Assistant in the Chemistry Department from 1970 to 1981.  I think that most students were largely unaware of the key role that Eileen and all other lab. assistants played in their science education.  But the science teachers certainly recognised their importance.

Eileen could always be relied upon to perform her duties with 100% efficiency coupled with a massive dose of good humour.  Teachers were supposed to give her at least 24 hours’ notice for all materials required in classes involving practical work. In reality this was often reduced to about 30 minutes!  But she responded with a laugh and a smile and performed the necessary miracles.

Such was her radiant personality that she became a close and dearly loved friend to all the Chemistry teachers, rather than just another member of staff. Eileen – you were a ray of sunshine and we all loved you dearly and how we miss you. To her sons and daughter, Bill, John and Rachel, we extend our deepest sympathies. We shall always remember her."
